MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Charlie Smyth got enough notice that he won the New Orleans Saints’ kicking job that his family had time for the hours-long flight from Ireland to be in attendance at Hard Rock Stadium for the 24-year-old’s professional debut.

And he gave them more than something to remember.

The Irishman kicked a perfect onside kick that the Saints recovered with 1:15 left in Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, giving his team a chance to pull an improbable comeback.

But unfortunately for Smyth, the Saints’ offense did not finish the job.

Tyler Shough and the Saints failed to convert on fourth-and-1, leading to a wild 21-17 loss that sunk New Orleans to 2-10 on the season. But while that was a normal-looking score, the game was anything but.
