Detroit ― There have been four straight days of football at Ford Field this week, Michigan State's 38-28 win over Maryland on Saturday bookended by the Lions' Thanksgiving Day win and the high-school state finals.

So, it was hard not to notice the reality of the situation for Michigan State, which, under two years of Jonathan Smith as head football coach, had two few high-school stars coming in, and too few pro prospects going out.
