On Thanksgiving, Elias “Alex” Hanhan planned to close Oxford Street, his men’s clothing store in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood — one of only two days a year that he takes off work.

But on Friday, it was back to tending to his highly distinctive shop at 991 Market St., where he and his wife, Nahil Hanhan, have presided for 30 years through economic ups and downs, challenging neighborhood street conditions and the banning of cars from Market Street.
