Around two million UK drivers will be forced to pay new charges under major rule changes.

A new pay-per-mile tax system has been confirmed by the Government, targeting owners of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid plug-ins.

This comes on top of new vehicle excise duty (VED) charges for EV owners earlier this year.

It will mean hundreds of pounds of added running costs for electric owners.

EV drivers will face a 3p-per-mile rate and hybrid owners 1.5p.

Those with EVs travelling the average 8,500 miles will pay £255.

Many drivers cover more than that distance in a year and will have to pay even more.
