A new Liverpool tourist tax cannot become a “war chest for headline-chasing experiments”, according to the city’s opposition leader after the Metro Mayor spoke of hopes for a new Beatles experience . Ahead of last week’s Budget, the government confirmed regional mayors would be granted powers to introduce an overnight accommodation levy otherwise known as a tourist tax.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram – who has campaigned for the measure – said a “modest” levy could bring in around £17m to the city each year. He said it could also help create an immersive experience in the city centre similar to ABBA Voyage in London.
