Carers targeted by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Labour Party government over accidental payments have spoken out. Thousands of carers were forced out of work after incurring vast debts from benefits overpayments.

That is the message from the head of a review into the scandal. Speaking to the I paper, Liz Sayce has said: “There hadn’t been an overarching plan with concerted leadership to make sure this problem was fixed. That was very noticeable.”

“If it had been really clear to people how their earnings would be averaged, far fewer people would have gone over that limit,” she said.
