INDIANAPOLIS — The 2026 Indiana Legislative Session started at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, in a break with long tradition.

Technically, each legislative session starts with "Organization Day" in November. But lawmakers rarely stay to do any official business beyond voting to come back to do business in January.

That isn't the only tradition that is being set aside for President Donald Trump's push to redraw Indiana's legislative districts . On Monday, Dec. 1, Indiana House Republicans released a draft of what that map would look like.

In an effort to block the redistricting push, Indiana' House Democrats did not show up for the start of the session, hoping to deny Speaker Todd Huston a quorum. 68 Republicans did show up, overcoming the Democratic absence.
