MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Dec. 1, 1884, the original Science Hall on University of Wisconsin- Madison’s campus was destroyed by a fire.
All of the students got out safely, but only some of the scientific collections were saved from the fire.
The original building, which was made of wood, was torn down because of the damage it suffered.
The university board of regents started plans immediately for a new building, with the design focused on fire safety to prevent this from ever happening again.
The Science Hall that is still in use at UW-Madison today was built mostly of steel and masonry.
The new building was completed in December of 1887.
According to the university, it is one of the oldest buildings to use steel beam in its structure.
