A teen was mauled to death after he climbed a 20-foot wall to break into a lion enclosure at a popular zoo in Brazil.
The Arruda Câmara Zoo, also known as Bica, said in a statement that the 19-year-old died because of injuries inflicted by the lioness Leona.
Video shared to social media showed the teen sliding down a tree toward the big cat which immediately begins pouncing and clawing.
Local news outlets identified the teen as Gerson De Melo Machado.
“This is an extremely sad episode for all, and we send our solidarity and condolences to the family and friends,” the zoo said in a statement, noting that the park was closed as part of safety protocols following the incident.
