A teenager was killed in a barrage of gunfire along Powell Street in Norristown, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday, Dec. 1.
The shooting happened around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, in the 1000 block of Powell Street, according to District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Police Chief Michael Trail.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Hamid Boyd of Norristown, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after ShotSpotter detected numerous shots at Powell and Spruce Streets, police detailed in the release.
Officers immediately began CPR before Boyd was taken to Jefferson Montgomery Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, investigators said.
Boyd’s family wrote that he had been offered several Division I basketball scholarships but chose instead to enlist in the Army. They said he had “aspirations and plans for his child and mother” and had been eagerly awaiting his deployment, noting, “this was not the anticipated action.”
A joint homicide investigation is underway involving Norristown Police and Montgomery County Detectives, according to the announcement.
Anyone with information is asked to call Norristown Police at 610-270-0977 or Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3386. Tips may be submitted anonymously.
Additional details about Boyd's life were not immediately available. His family is invited to share more information with Daily Voice by emailing jpikora@dailyvoice.com.
