INDEPENDENCE, Va. — Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered that flags in Virginia be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, December 2, in honor of Virginia Department of Corrections Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, who was killed in the line of duty on November 17, 2025 .
Lewis died during an inmate attack at River North Correctional Center in Grayson County. Authorities said 32-year-old John Holomon Russell attacked Hall. Two other officers were hurt in the attack, while Hall died after being taken to a local hospital.
In a statement issued Monday, Youngkin directed that the flags of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia be lowered to half-staff at sunrise and remain so until sunset.
