A Merseyside council has revealed it has to pay £250,000 excess every time someone makes a claim against the local authority after hitting a pothole or damaging their car on the road. Wirral Council has awarded a contract for the next three years for surface dressing and microsurfacing works in the borough.

This contract has been awarded to make sure the council is still delivering on its statutory duties under the Highways Act 1980.

According to an officer report published by the local authority on November 24, Kiely Bros Ltd was seen as the most advantageous firm to go with. The contract is estimated to cost around £13.5m.
