PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Perry County Schools plans to create its own police department to replace contracted school resource officers from the sheriff’s office.
The district has used the Perry County Sheriff’s Office for school resource officers for years, but now wants full-time officers who work only inside their schools.
“Over the last couple years we’ve actually been talking about what would it be like, what would it look like if we had our own police force. They would be our employees full-time and so we’ve just began working with other school districts that have done that and seen some positive outcomes from it. And we’ve just made that decision to go that route too,” said Jody Maggard, chief financial officer for Perry County Schools.
Maggard said start-up costs will be higher
