OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Eswin Mejia — the man charged in connection to a 2016 crash that killed 21-year-old Sarah Root — had his pretrial Monday.
Mejia, 29, changed his plea to “no contest” on one count of motor vehicle homicide-DUI . For one count of failure to appear in court, he changed his plea to “guilty.”
In March, Mejia pled “not guilty” to the charges out of Douglas County. His defense attorney announced Monday that he wanted to cancel and change the pleas — and the court granted the amendment.
For the first charge, a class 2A felony, he is facing a 20-year maximum sentence. This includes an order that he could not drive for 15 years, as well as having his operator’s license taken away. Failure to appear in court, the second charge, is a class 4 felony that comes with a 2-year
