CHARLESTON — Longtime Nancy Mace political strategist Austin McCubbin has resigned his leadership position in the Lowcountry congresswoman’s gubernatorial campaign, urging voters to “scratch her name from the list” of Republican candidates.
In a lengthy statement posted to social media Dec. 1, McCubbin — the former South Carolina state director for Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns — said he could no longer work for Mace over what he termed her alignment with Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, a frequent Trump critic on Capitol Hill whom many speculate could contend for the Republican nomination for president in 2028.
Trump’s team is aware of his resignation, McCubbin said when reached by phone.
“I would not make this move without them knowing,” he said.
