Algoma Steel issued 1,000 layoff notices on Monday.
The layoff notices will be effective March 23, 2026, and are a combination of the transformation to Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking and the effect of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The transformation timelines have sped up as a result of the unprecedented tariffs, significantly affecting the steelmaker. The company reported almost half a billion dollars in losses last quarter as the 50 per cent tariffs on steel imposed by the U.S. effectively shut it out of the market.
Algoma Steel is the Sault’s largest employer and has about 2,700 employees.
In a statement, Algoma Steel says the highly integrated North American steel market has been “significantly impacted by the unprecedented tariffs imposed by the United States,”
