PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia highway patrol officer who was struck by a vehicle and critically injured nearly seven years ago has died.

The Philadelphia FOP Lodge #5 announced Tuesday that Philadelphia Highway Patrol Officer Andy Chan passed away.

"His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him. We ask that you hold his wife, children, loved ones, friends, and his Brothers and Sisters in the Police Department in your prayers during this difficult time. Andy died a hero, and we will always remember and honor his sacrifice," the FOP said in a statement.

Officer Chan's motorcycle was struck by an elderly driver on a section of Rhawn Street in Northeast Philadelphia back in January 2019. He was 48 years old at the time.
