WEST DES MOINES, Iowa —
The MidAmerican RecPlex in West Des Moines is set to expand with a $40 million addition, following the city council's approval of architectural plans on Monday night.
The popular city-owned sports destination has already generated over $47 million in economic benefits for the suburb, and the new project aims to further boost its impact.
General Manager Shayne Ratcliff expressed excitement about the expansion, noting, "It was always our goal to continue to expand. We didn't think it would be this quick."
The 96,000-square-foot addition will be located on the east end of the current RecPlex and will feature a multi-purpose event arena with seating for 3,000 spectators. Most of the year, it will serve as a third ice arena, but it will also accommodate conventions,
