Kingston’s Planet Woodstock is one of Ulster County’s only remaining equipment stores for musicians, which may come as a surprise given the area’s proliferation of artists and venues. It’s just simply too hard for mom-and-pop shops to compete with big online retailers and warehouses in neighboring cities.

But Planet Woodstock has not just managed to survive — it’s growing. Helmed by Dustin Bryant since 2011, the owner barely had a chance to recover from a grassroots campaign for Kingston’s Ward 8 Alderman before opening his new location at 1104 Ulster Avenue on Sat., Nov. 29.
