MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — N’Jeri Henry is trying to sound the alarm on a worrying development: Homeless shelters in Montgomery County are filling up fast.
“For each person that we move out, another person is in in less than 24 hours, so that tells you a lot,” she said.
Henry says shelters usually see a steady increase in people looking for shelter during “Hypothermia Season”, which goes from Nov. 1 to April 1.
However, this year, she says all four of Interfaith’s homeless shelters hit capacity within the first three weeks of the season.
As a result, Henry is not only trying to find ways to fit more people in her shelters, but she’s also had to reach out to other institutions, hoping to figure out a way to keep them inside a little longer until she has a space available.
