FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — With federal job layoffs and rising living costs straining many families, both the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the School Board say they’re taking a more coordinated approach heading into the new fiscal year.

During a joint work session, officials reviewed a 28-page budget forecast, emphasizing that it is only a starting point. Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay was deliberate in calling it a “forecast,” noting that many financial variables remain unsettled. As budget submissions continue to come in, both the county and the school system plan to refine projections ahead of two key releases:

The superintendent’s proposed budget on January 22

The county executive’s budget on February 17
