LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation that would require social media companies to verify users’ ages and obtain parental consent before minors can create accounts.
The proposed bill would establish age verification requirements for anyone opening or using a social media account. If the user is a minor, consent from a parent or guardian would be required before the account could be activated.
Angelique Conner, a Lansing parent of a 14-year-old boy, said she supports the proposed regulations.
“To limit things that they’re exposed to that they’re not ready for, I’m for it,” Conner said. “I do believe that there should be restrictions to access. There’s so many things out there, not just social media but [internet], you know, where they can do searches.”
