COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers were warned Tuesday that the state is facing a widening gap between what its road system needs and what it can afford, according to a new update delivered at the State House.

South Carolina’s population is expected to grow by more than one million people over the next 20 years, to 6.6 million people. But the revenue that pays for roads — primarily the gas tax and vehicle sales fees — is not keeping pace, according to Frank Rainwater with the SC Department of Revenue and Fiscal Affairs.

“There is no automatic fix. There is no simple solution,” said Rainwater.

According to his projections, vehicle use is increasing even faster than the population. Most of the state’s transportation revenue comes from the vehicle sales tax and the gas tax increase
