Claude, the albino alligator that was said to be the “unofficial mascot” of the California Academy of Sciences and San Francisco , has died at 30.
The California Academy of Sciences announced the death of the reptile, who was a famous resident of the museum and educational institution based in Golden Gate Park, on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Claude, who celebrated his 30 th birthday in September, had been monitored closely in recent weeks due to a waning appetite, according to Cal Academy, and was recently “moved behind-the-scenes to undergo treatment for a suspected infection.”
How did Claude die?
A full exam and necropsy will be conducted by the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and that will “yield more information about the cause of death,” Cal Academy said.
