The city of Toledo asked Toledo City Council for more money to finish swapping out old water meters, but council unanimously rejected the request Tuesday night.
The city has spent about $84 million on the advanced metering infrastructure project since 2020. The Department of Public Utilities asked the council to approve an additional $960,000 to enter into a new contract with DLZ Ohio Inc. to provide professional program management services to finish the smart water meter project.
But council members balked at paying an outside firm to supervise the work of local contractors. The expenditure would have taken $480,000 from the Water Replacement Fund and $480,000 from the Sanitary Sewer Replacement Fund.
The item failed 11-0. Councilman Adam Martinez was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.
