Syracuse, N.Y. — Charlotte “Chuckie” Holstein, a beloved civic leader whose activism, volunteerism and tenacity helped transform Syracuse’s civic landscape, died Tuesday at her home. She was 100.
Holstein began her career as a teacher, but she soon emerged as one of Central New York’s most influential “citizen trustees,” devoting her life to civic engagement, women’s leadership and community improvement.
She co-founded Leadership Greater Syracuse and FOCUS Greater Syracuse, two programs that continue to train and inspire generations of local leaders.
Today is a hard day for FOCUS, said Alicia Ernest, the non-profit’s executive director.
