Brevard County commissioners said Tuesday they will take a closer look at Blue Origin’s ability to continue releasing wastewater into the Indian River Lagoon after residents strongly opposed the proposal.
The proposed plan would allow the space technology company, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, to discharge nearly half a million gallons of processed and unprocessed industrial wastewater into the lagoon each day.
Dozens of residents urged commissioners to reconsider.
“If Brevard County is investing to keep the Indian River clean, this would counter that investment,” resident Julio Torres said.
Commissioners had been considering whether to request a public meeting with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection about the proposal, a step that could have advanced it.
