STOCKTON, Calif. —

Two people were shot in a drive-by shooting in Stockton on Tuesday evening, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the report of a shooting just after 7 p.m. near the intersection of Gertrude and Horner avenues.

Officials said both victims had sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to an area hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The sheriff's office has asked the public to avoid the area as deputies investigate the shooting.

Tuesday's shooting comes just days after a mass shooting at a toddler's birthday party in Stockton . Three children and a 21-year-old man were killed and 13 others were injured.

Officials said it's too early in the investigation to know if there is any connection between the two shootings.
