ELKHART, Ind. -- The Nappanee Street pedestrian bridge is scheduled for removal in the summer of 2026 following the findings of multiple inspections by independent structural engineering firms.
These evaluations determined that the bridge has reached the end of its life cycle and can no longer remain in service.
Due to its age and design, the structure does not meet current structural standards or modern ADA accessibility requirements.
It cannot be repaired or refurbished in a way that would bring it into compliance.
The City of Elkhart has worked closely with Elkhart Community Schools, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG), and elected officials both at a State and Federal level to explore opportunities for a partnership
