Srinagar- The government on Wednesday withdrew its order mandating smartphone manufacturers to pre install the Sanchar Saathi cyber security app on all devices.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) said the decision comes after a sharp rise in voluntary downloads, with six lakh users registering for the app in the past 24 hours.

The mandate, announced on November 28, required the app to be pre loaded on new smartphones and pushed as an update on existing ones. The move had triggered criticism from opposition leaders who raised privacy and surveillance concerns.

In a statement, the DoT said the requirement was aimed at helping citizens, particularly those less aware of cyber frauds, but the recent spike in adoption has made the mandate unnecessary.
