Chico’s red light cameras are going live, and in the first month more than 1,200 activations were recorded.

The first of five intersections with red light cameras in the city went live Nov. 30 at Mangrove and East Ninth avenues and in the first 24 hours of operation 11 violations were recorded, according to an email by Chico Police Department Public Information Officer Kayla Gates.

Gates said red light camera activations are triggered by violations including failure to stop at a red light, turning right on red or completing a left turn on red.

The 11 violations caught on camera on Sunday are still under review by operators, and drivers may face citations of $465. Before Sunday, more than 1,200 violations were recorded on Mangrove and East Ninth avenues while the camera was in the warnin
