ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. —

The Northshore Humane Society is experiencing an outpouring of community support after a kennel fire displaced dozens of animals.

The fire was caused by an electrical issue, which happened while employees used a heater to keep larger dogs warm in the cold. Advertisement

All the dogs were rescued unharmed, but investigations into the incident are still underway.

Many shelter pets are now housed in warm homes, but 20 still need foster families.

Those interested in fostering must have a home without other animals, as there is no time for the vetting process.

Several business owners also showed their support with a donation of $1,000 to help build a new shelter.

The current shelter is 70 years old.

The society is roughly halfway to its fundraising goal.
