Convicted killer John Sproule won’t have to spend further time behind bars for the fatal stabbing of a Calgary-area man on a Banff street, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Justice Johanna Price handed Sproule a two-year conditional sentence to be served in the community for manslaughter in the Sept. 3, 2022, killing of Priddis resident Ryden Brogden.

Crown prosecutor Mykel Long had argued Sproule should be sentenced to between five and six years for the deadly assault.

But defence counsel Cory Wilson submitted further custody on top of the 98 days his client spent on remand wasn’t necessary since Price ruled jurors must have concluded Sproule was defending himself but used excessive force when he stabbed and slashed the victim 19 times.
