RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Richmond School Board voted Tuesday night unanimously to rename Armstrong High School Armstrong-Kennedy High School, a surprise decision that honors the histories of two East End schools.
The vote, which was not originally scheduled, came after years of advocacy by alumni and community members seeking recognition for John F. Kennedy High School. Supporters said the new name restores Kennedy’s legacy.
“One gave the building, one gave the legacy. It needs to be on the marquee, Armstrong Kennedy,” said a school board member.
The Armstrong High School name dates back to 1865.
More than 20 years after Armstrong and John F. Kennedy high schools merged, the Richmond School Board voted to reinsert Kennedy into the school’s name.
