RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Mary Munford Elementary School is getting pedestrian hybrid beacon to address traffic safety concerns.
The technology will help people cross Cary Street near Commonwealth Avenue.
The crosswalk system will activate a red light to force cars to stop when pedestrians need to cross.
Pedestrians and bicyclists can activate it by pushing a button that will first give cars a flashing yellow, alerting them to slow down before turning yellow and then red.
The project also comes with the installation of a high visibility crosswalk and ADA ramps.
The city announced it will be installed this month and construction should wrap up summer 2026.
“I started crying,” said Katherine Jones, PTA president at Mary Munford Elementary. “I was like, oh my gosh, I don’t believe it’s act
