A Strathmore woman is at the top of the waiting list for a rare, life-saving transplant of six of her abdominal organs, which has a 50 per cent success rate.

Amid a five-year battle with necrotizing pancreatitis, 24-year-old Maggie Kosterewa was told last year that the transplant is her only option. In June, she was deemed well enough to be placed on the transplant list — but now it’s a waiting game.

As soon as there’s a donor that has all six of the organs Kosterewa needs — small bowel, portal vein, liver, stomach, pancreas and lower esophagus — her family will get a call, and will then head to Edmonton for the surgery.
