Dr Salvador Plasencia, the physician who supplied ketamine to actor Matthew Perry, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. The sentencing took place in a Los Angeles courtroom, presided over by U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett. In addition to the prison term, Plasencia will serve two years of supervised release. Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom *Friends*, died in 2023 at the age of 54 from complications related to ketamine use. Although the judge clarified that Plasencia did not provide the specific dose that led to Perry's death, she stated, "You and others helped Mr Perry on the road to such an ending by continuing to feed his ketamine addiction. You exploited Mr Perry’s addiction for your own profit." Plasencia, 44, was the first of five defendants to be sentenced in connection with Perry's death. He admitted to illegally selling large quantities of ketamine to Perry, fully aware of the actor's struggles with addiction. Court documents revealed that Plasencia had referred to Perry as a "moron" in a text to another doctor, indicating he believed he could exploit Perry financially. During the hearing, Perry's family delivered emotional victim impact statements. His mother, Suzanne Perry, expressed her devastation, stating, "My brother’s death turned my world upside down. It punched a crater in my life. His absence is everywhere." Madeleine Morrison, Perry's half-sister, added, "The world mourns my brother. He was everyone’s favourite friend." Plasencia's defence team portrayed him as a once-respected physician who made a "reckless" decision that ruined his career. They described his remorse as profound, noting that he has relocated to Arizona with his family due to threats he received following the case. In July, Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of ketamine distribution, with prosecutors dropping five additional counts as part of a plea agreement. The maximum sentence he could have faced was 40 years, but the judge opted for a lesser term. The remaining defendants involved in the case are expected to be sentenced in the coming months. Perry's long battle with addiction began during his time on *Friends*, where he became one of television's most beloved stars. His tragic death has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of medical professionals in treating patients with addiction issues.
