KYLE, Texas — A 500,000-pound oak tree along Old Stagecoach Road in Kyle is getting a second chance at life in a new location.
Crews are spending two days moving the 400-year-old tree to prepare for a road-widening project.
Last December, the city originally planned to remove the live oak tree as it sat 6 inches from the road, causing traffic restrictions.
“I love the tree,” neighbor Dave Tarrant said. “I just wish it hadn’t been so close to the road because it did, you know, cause some close calls when you’re driving.”
However, after pushback from neighbors and community members, leaders voted in February to relocate it instead to a nearby future pocket park.
Contractor crews say it's taken months of preparation to ensure that it would survive the move.
