The Gujarat State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) has dismissed an appeal by the New India Assurance Co Ltd and ordered it to pay an insurance claim of Rs 3.5 lakh to a patient. The commission ruled that the a undergone by the complainant, Vanita Sighala, was for “metabolic derangement” and not a cosmetic or weight loss procedure. It directed the company to pay the claim amount along with an additional Rs 10,000.
On November 28, 2025, the Gujarat SCDRC confirmed the order passed by the Consumer Dispute Redressal District Commission, Surat (Additional) on August 13, 2021. The district commission had directed the insurer to pay Sighala Rs 3.5 lakh (the sum insured) with 7% interest, along with Rs 3,000 for mental agony and Rs 2,000 as legal costs.
