CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte food pantry that serves hundreds of families each week has relocated after enduring repeated break-ins that stole food, damaged property, and disrupted services to those in need.
Hearts United for Good, known as HUGS CLT, moved Tuesday to a new location on Central Avenue after being burglarized six times at its North Tryon Street warehouse since 2022, executive director Bethany McDonald said.
"Safety is definitely a concern," McDonald said.
The most recent break-ins involved the same person twice within the past few months, according to McDonald. Surveillance video captured a man roaming through the warehouse, taking food and damaging property. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had been arrested or faces charges in connection with the incidents.
