As England set out in search of redemption after their bruising and frankly humiliating defeat in the opening Test of the 2025 Ashes, many viewers were asking the same question: Why are England’s players wearing black armbands?

The answer is both simple and solemn — it’s a tribute to the late Robin Smith, the former England batting great who passed away earlier this week.

England Cricket confirmed on X that the team would wear black armbands in honour of Smith ahead of the second Test at the Gabba on Thursday.

We’re wearing black armbands throughout all of the second Test to honour the memory of Robin Smith, who sadly passed away earlier this week.Rest in Peace, Judge ❤️ pic.twitter.com/XOtQksH8Ck
