Police say a 'loud explosion' was heard as an earthquake hit Lancashire overnight. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed a 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit the North West at 11.23pm on Wednesday night (December 3).

It struck off the coast of Silverdale, near Carnforth and close to the border with Cumbria , with a depth of 3km. The BGS has received multiple reports of the earthquake being felt in areas around Carnforth, Morecambe, Heysham, Burton-in-Kendal and Arnside.

Some reports have also been made to the BGS of the earthquake being felt as far away as Blackpool and Cleveleys to the south, and Kendal to the north. Lancashire Police says it is not aware of any injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake.
