NEW ORLEANS — The Department of Homeland Security announced the launch of a large-scale immigration operation in the New Orleans area. The Associated Press previously reported that around 250 Border Patrol agents were expected in the city.
On Wednesday, the DHS confirmed it had launched the operation, saying the goal was to arrest criminal undocumented immigrants "roaming free thanks to sanctuary policies," which they claim limit or prevent local police from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests. Their release mentioned a number of violent undocumented immigrants who were released from custody in Louisiana. However, ICE data has shown that many of those detained have no criminal record.
