U.S. Border Patrol and other federal agents on Wednesday launched immigration enforcement operations in the New Orleans region, federal officials said, confirming Louisiana as the next host of the escalating immigration crackdown from President Donald Trump’s administration.

The operation, which a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said would begin Wednesday and last for an indefinite period, follows large-scale immigration sweeps Border Patrol has led in Chicago and several cities in North Carolina in recent weeks.

While news leaked several weeks ago that the administration was planning to target New Orleans , Wednesday’s announcement marked the first official confirmation that a host of federal agents will soon descend upon south Louisiana.
