A mother of three, Amie Barnes, was found dead in her boyfriend's bed after an accidental overdose of painkillers intended to alleviate her chronic back pain. The 37-year-old midwife, who worked at hospitals in Blackpool and Preston, had spent the evening of July 25 at her partner Jack's home in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire. The couple enjoyed a bottle of wine and a takeaway meal before retiring for the night. The following morning, Jack left for work after saying goodbye to Amie. Upon his return, he discovered her lying face down in bed. Emergency services were called, and initially, her death was treated as suspicious due to apparent facial injuries and blood around her mouth. However, investigators later determined that these were the result of post-mortem blood pooling and contouring caused by Amie sleeping with her vape device beneath her face. A post-mortem CT scan found no natural cause of death, but toxicology results revealed that Amie had consumed several painkillers before her death, along with a minimal amount of alcohol. During an inquest held at Preston Coroners' Court, Assistant Coroner Richard Taylor stated that while each painkiller alone would not have been fatal, "the concomitant use may have caused significant sedation which, in the absence of any other cause, may have resulted in her death." Amie's GP confirmed that she had sought medical advice multiple times in the seven months leading up to her death. She had been prescribed various painkillers while awaiting spinal surgery at Salford Royal Hospital. Detective Sergeant Jamie Robinson from Blackpool Police explained that officers ruled out any third-party involvement in her death. "When we arrived, Amie was lying on the floor with a cover over her," DS Robinson said. "That wasn't where she was found; she had been moved by the paramedics. She was found face down, and blood pools to the lowest part of the body, which explains her position. A vape under her face may have caused her face to contour." The coroner concluded the cause of death as misadventure, stating, "It seems to me more likely than not that this was unintended and that is what we call misadventure; death is the unintended consequence of an intended act. She may have intended to take painkillers, she was in pain, she has had a drink and may have taken more than was sensible, and that is not being judgemental." Following Amie's death, her friend Olivia Drinkwater, a nurse at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, arranged for Blackpool Tower to be illuminated in pink, Amie's favourite colour, on September 9. Olivia described Amie as "one of the kind-hearted people who everyone warmed to. She was like a breath of fresh air, so loving, humbling and caring, and she is so very missed by her family and friends." Amie's funeral took place at Carleton Crematorium on August 15, followed by a wake at the Number Three pub. She leaves behind three children aged 19, 12, and 7, along with other family members.
