In November 2019, news broke that Hawley had been hired to write and direct a new Star Trek film, one that would not bring back cast members like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and instead would explore a new era of the franchise. Yet Hawley's version was scrapped in favor of a reunion film for the Kelvin cast, which would also ultimately be scrapped.
