Recreational use of cannabis is legal in California, but how Californians travel with it — and where — could get them into trouble.
In California, 37% of adults reported cannabis use in the past three months, according to a survey published earlier this year from researchers at UC San Diego. While adult recreational usage is legal in more than a dozen states, not all states have adopted such measures.
Because cannabis is still illegal under federal law, people can’t take it across state lines — even between two states where recreational usage among adults is legal in both (for example, like driving from California to Oregon), according to Moorea Warren, a spokesperson for California’s Department of Cannabis Control, in an email to the Desert Sun.
