AUSTIN, Texas — Despite federal funding cuts wiping out 10% of its budget, Art Spark Texas continues providing art opportunities for artists with disabilities, veterans and seniors through programs like monthly art classes.
In a recent visual art class at St. George’s Court, seniors and disabled adults gathered to create bead-based projects with a personal touch to gift to others.
“The first project we're gonna be working on is a name badge,” said Jerry Slayton, director of education for Art Spark Texas.
The hands-on nature of the projects gives participants a chance to explore colors, textures and designs at their own pace.
Pete Sebert, 84, held up a beaded bookmark he made for his granddaughter, noting, "It provides a link. It’s a way of reaching out.”
