The State government’s decision to allow women to work night shifts in shops and establishments has been welcomed by female residents and experts in Dehradun. The Uttarakhand cabinet recently gave its conditional approval for employing women in night shifts (9 PM-6 AM) in shops and establishments with mandatory security provisions and prior written consent from workers. The decision seeks to improve employment opportunities and empower women. Residents, along with experts, emphasised that commercial establishment owners must also take responsibility for ensuring safety measures, such as installing CCTV cameras, to make women feel comfortable working night shifts.
