KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Ironwood trees have been part of the Kailua Bay shoreline for years. But more and more of them are becoming casualties as the ocean eats away at the sand that’s beneath them.
“My kids grew up here. They played on these sands,” said longtime Kailua resident Eileen Phillips. “There was a lot more to do down here than to watch the trees fall. It’s not fun.”
The city plans to remove two trees that recently fell, along with a stump. But the Department of Parks and Recreation will also remove nine other ironwoods that are in danger of toppling over and causing a hazard to the public.
“We don’t want to remove the trees unless there’s a safety hazard because they’re still trees,” said Nate Serota of the parks department. “They still do provide an environmental benefit,
